California has new rules
for air conditioning equipment.

When an air conditioner or furnace fails deciding whether to spend the money on a new system or repairs is more difficult. On January 1 2010, a government-required change in the refrigerant used in air-conditioning and heat pump systems takes effect.

For years R-22 refrigerant has been the air conditioning standard. If it leaks, R-22 can contribute to ozone depletion.

But as of Jan. 1, 2010 R-22 systems will no longer be on the market. It will be replaced by a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient alternative R-410A.  ( Puron is the Carrier brand name for R-410A)

R-410A is not compatible with R-22. Current air conditioning systems cannot use R-410A because it is run at much higher pressure and requires different equipment. New furnaces are engineered for R-410A systems.

The phase-out of R-22 does not mean service and parts will be unavailable for older air-conditioning models.

The new rules outlaw all chlorine containing refrigerants in new equipment. It is anticipated that service for older R-22 models may disappear by 2020.

The problem.

R-22 based air conditioning systems require an air flow across the evaporator coil (the inside coil) of 300 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) per ton of cooling.

An R-410A air conditioning system requires an air flow of 400 cubic feet per minute per ton of cooling.

Thus incorporating a new furnace which delivers 400 CFM per ton is providing too much airflow for an R-22 system.

This will cool your home or office BUT it will not remove as much humidity. Comfort is directly related to humidity. A cool home with high humidity is not comfortable.
