Do it .. especially with budget conscious customers. Better to get a sale. They don't know most old furnaces were engineered to blow about 300 CFM's of air per ton of air conditioning .. which was fine for the old condensers. But the new condensers need about 400 CFM's per ton of air conditioning.

HVAC equipment manufacturers make builders or tract models. They are cheaper for a reason. Tract and builders models of heating and air conditioning equipment look identical but are simply built to lesser standards. They have an engineered / expected lifespan that is much lower. They are hard to tell apart from top end models. Far too often they are substituted for top end equipment. A low price quote is a signal to be careful. You have probably heard about a newer home needing a new HVAC system at 10-12 years. Likely it was a tract model.

Not properly evacuating HVAC systems then not checking freon levels is common. The completely hidden got ya. The amount of refrigerant "freon" AND no moisture within a system is critical to ensure energy efficiency, your comfort, the lifespan of the system and your operating costs. HVAC systems operate efficiently within a very narrow tolerance level. Moisture is like a poison to todays air conditioning systems. PROPERLY evacuating a new system before releasing the freon does two things. One: it removes moisture and Two: it removes small welding residues from inside the system. Moisture turns into an acid if left in the system thru improper evacuation.
Mis-matching parts can make a good HVAC system cheaper but inferior. I'll do you a favour and re-use got ya. When a bad contractor reduces your price by using the old furnace or evaporator coil you can expect your running costs to be higher and the system to wear out faster. Repair costs will be much higher as mis-matched parts wear each other out.
Generally speaking it is rare that an old furnace or evaporator coil can be successfully re-used. However an old evaporator may be okay if your heating and air conditioning system was initially oversized and the new system is of smaller BTU rating.

A common short cut is using grills that are for heating only systems. Air conditioning grills have double sized slits to allow for a much greater air flow.
When air flow is too low the system operates at higher pressure and the compressor may experience liquid slugging. Liquid slugging is when the refrigerant returns to the compressor in liquid form instead of as a gas. Compressors are designed to compress gas or vapour only and not liquids.
There are lots more little tricks to do with electrical supply, wire size, under and over sizing, venting and duct work. However, we're sure you get the idea! Air conditioning and heaters only work well when specified correctly and properly installed. There are no such things as shortcuts in air conditioning or heating that work!!
